SEIKO 5 SPORTS SKX SERIES
First released in the 90s, the SKX Seiko 5 Sports watches were a modernised version of the classics – updating the reliability and durability of the 1960s originals. The 90s collection offered improved practicality – enhanced water resistance, strengthened crystals along with luminous hands and hour markers. These wearable, loveable values still stay strong in today’s modernised Seiko 5 Sports designs.
SEIKO 5 SPORTS ‘FIELD’ SERIES
The Seiko 5 Sports 'Field' collection was created with an 'in the field’ military design – taking inspiration from a style originally called a ‘trench watch,’ created to be robust and reliable in tough conditions – echoing the Seiko 5 Sports characteristics.
SEIKO 5 SPORTS SNXS SERIES
Continuing the evolution of our long-standing Seiko 5 Sports SNXS series, this new watch adopts the design principles of the originals. Built to fit the theme of 'classic sports' this watch takes the essence of the 70s Seiko 5 Sports models and integrates them with modern specifications.
SEIKO 5 SPORTS LADIES
Seiko 5 Sports Ladies' watches offer the durability and everyday performance the line is known for in smaller case sizes. All Seiko watches are designed to be worn by everyone; those within the Ladies' collection are usually smaller in size.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Seiko 5 Sports?
Seiko 5 Sports is a collection of automatic mechanical watches which has been in production for over 50 years. The '5' refers to five core attributes present in every watch in the range: automatic movement, day-date display, water resistance, a recessed crown at the four o'clock position and a durable case and bracelet. The current collection includes the SKX, Field and SNXS series, with case sizes from 28mm up to 42.5mm.
What does the 5 in Seiko 5 mean?
The name comes from five key features that define every watch in the collection. Automatic movement means the watch is powered by the motion of the wearer's wrist, with no battery required. A day-date display on the dial shows both the day and the date in a single window at three o'clock. Water resistance is rated to 10 bar (100m) across the range. The recessed crown at four o'clock sits flush with the case to prevent accidental adjustment and the case and bracelet are built for durability across all references.
Is Seiko 5 Sports a good watch?
Seiko 5 Sports is one of the most established entry points into mechanical watchmaking. Every reference features an automatic movement, Lumibrite on hands and indices for low-light legibility, 10 bar (100m) water resistance, and Hardlex crystal. Most models deliver a 41-hour power reserve. The accessible and wearable combination of in-house movement, open case back, day-date complication and build quality is recogised industry-wide.
Is Seiko 5 quartz?
Every Seiko 5 Sports watch uses an automatic (self-winding) mechanical movement. The current collection runs on the 4R36, 4R34 or 2R06 calibres, all with 24 jewels. There are no quartz or battery-powered watches in the Seiko 5 Sports range.
What movement does Seiko 5 use?
Current Seiko 5 Sports watches use the Calibre 4R36 (most popular across the range), the 4R34 for GMT references, or the 2R06 for the compact 28mm and 32mm case sizes. All three are automatic movements with 24 jewels, hacking (stop-seconds) functionality and a 41-hour power reserve on most references.
Does Seiko 5 have sapphire crystal?
Seiko 5 Sports watches use Hardlex crystal rather than sapphire. Hardlex is Seiko's proprietary hardened mineral glass, offering good scratch and impact resistance. Variants across the range include standard Hardlex, curved Hardlex, dual-curved Hardlex and Hardlex with a magnified date window, depending on the reference.
Is Seiko 5 waterproof?
All current Seiko 5 Sports references are rated to 10 bar (100m) water resistance, suitable for everyday wear, swimming and snorkelling. This rating applies uniformly across the SKX, Field and SNXS series. The crown should be fully pushed in and locked before water contact, and water resistance should be checked periodically by an authorised service centre.
What is the Seiko 5 Sports SKX?
The Seiko 5 Sports SKX series updates the original 1990s SKX watches, which were themselves a modernisation of Seiko's 1960s diver-style designs. Current SKX references retain the rotating bezel, bold dial layout and Lumibrite hands and indices of the originals, with enhanced water resistance and strengthened Hardlex crystal. The series is the broadest in the Seiko 5 Sports collection, ranging from the 28mm 'Compact' models through mid-size 38mm references up to the 42.5mm GMT.
What is the Seiko 5 Sports Field series?
The Seiko 5 Sports Field collection takes inspiration from military 'trench watches,' designed to be robust and legible in tough conditions. Field references feature clean, more utilitarian dial layouts than the SKX, with prominent Arabic numerals. Strap options include nylon, calfskin leather and stainless steel bracelets. Case sizes range from 36mm to 39.4mm.
Does Seiko 5 have a GMT?
Yes. Seiko 5 Sports offers a range of GMT references within the SKX series, all powered by the 4R34 calibre with a dedicated 24-hour hand for tracking a second time zone. GMT models are available in two case sizes: 42.5mm and 39.4mm. Named colourways on the original models include 'Black Grape', 'Blueberry' and 'Mikan orange', with further options across the wider GMT range.
Can you hand wind a Seiko 5?
Current Seiko 5 Sports watches powered by the 4R36 and 4R34 calibres can be hand wound by turning the crown clockwise when it is in the neutral position. This was not the case with previous Seiko 5 movements such as the 7S26, which were self-winding only. You cannot overwind a modern Seiko 5, as the movement has a built-in clutch that disengages once the mainspring is fully wound.
What size are Seiko 5 Sports watches?
Current Seiko 5 Sports case diameters range from 28mm to 42.5mm across the full collection. The SKX series offers the widest spread, from the 28mm Compact through mid-size 38mm models up to the 42.5mm GMT. The Field series runs from 36mm to 39.4mm, and the SNXS from 32mm to 38.5mm. Case thickness varies from around 11.2mm to 14.2mm depending on the model. Full dimensions are listed on each product page.
Is there a ladies' Seiko 5 Sports?
Yes. Of course Seiko 5 watches are designed to be worn by everyone, but the specific smaller and more compact Seiko 5 Sports ladies' collection spans the SKX, Field and SNXS series, with options at every size from the 28mm and 32mm Compact and SNXS references through to 38mm and 39.4mm models in the SKX and Field. All more petite ladies' references share the same 10 bar water resistance, automatic movement and day-date display as the rest of the range.
Where are Seiko 5 Sports watches made?
Seiko 5 Sports watches are manufactured by Seiko Watch Corporation. The automatic calibres used across the collection, including the 4R36, 4R34 and 2R06, are produced by Seiko's movement manufacturing division.
