ASTRON CALIBRE 3X
Watches powered by the Seiko in-house built 3X calibre with GPS functionality- exceptional accuracy updated remotely by GPS satellite when the wearer moves between timezones.
ASTRON CALIBRE 5X
Watches powered by the Seiko in-house built 5X calibre with advanced functionality – every component in the GPS module has been re-engineered to make it faster and more intuitive than ever. Just three seconds are needed to advance 14 hours from Tokyo to New York time, thanks to the system that moves hour, minute, and second hand independently.
What is Seiko Astron?
Seiko Astron is the world's first GPS solar watch. It connects to the GPS satellite network to adjust to the correct time zone at the touch of a button, powered by light. The current collection uses four calibres across two families: the Calibre 5X (5X53 and 5X83) and the Calibre 3X (3X62 and 3X22).
How does Seiko Astron work?
Astron receives signals from the GPS satellite network to determine the wearer's position and adjusts to the correct local time zone. The watch is powered by a solar cell beneath the dial that charges from both natural and artificial light, with a power reserve of approximately six months on a full charge and up to two years in power save mode. A time zone adjustment can be triggered by pressing a button on the case.
Does Seiko Astron need a battery?
Astron uses a rechargeable battery that is charged by a solar cell beneath the dial. The solar cell converts light energy from both natural and artificial sources into electronic energy, which is stored in the rechargeable battery and used to power the watch. Unlike a disposable button battery, the rechargeable battery is designed to be used for a long period by charging and discharging repeatedly, so there is no conventional battery to replace. On a full charge, the watch provides approximately six months of operation, with a power save mode extending this to around two years if left in darkness. Sufficient light strength and exposure time are needed to recharge fully.
What is the difference between Astron Calibre 5X and 3X?
Calibre 5X is the larger, more feature-rich movement. It offers dual-time display, a day indicator and advances 14 hours of time zone change in three seconds through independently moving hands. Calibre 3X is the more compact movement, with a smaller GPS reception antenna built on a single plate. The 3X displays the date rather than the day and omits dual-time, focusing on GPS time zone adjustment, perpetual calendar and power save functions.
What is the Astron GPS Solar 5X53?
The 5X53 is the core Calibre 5X movement used across the Astron collection. It features GPS time zone adjustment, dual-time display, a perpetual calendar running to February 2100, day display and a power reserve indicator. Selected references offer 20 bar (200m) water resistance.
What is the Astron GPS Solar 5X83?
The 5X83 adds a chronograph to the Calibre 5X platform, measuring up to 12 hours in 1/20-second increments alongside GPS time zone adjustment, dual-time display, perpetual calendar and day display. Introduced under the 'Solidity' design theme, the 5X83 features a vertical subdial layout that is unique within the Astron collection.
Why is Seiko Astron so expensive?
Astron pricing reflects the GPS solar technology: a GPS reception module and solar charging system both housed within a wristwatch case. Most references use titanium cases and bracelets with Seiko's super-hard coating for scratch resistance along with sapphire crystal, and Lumibrite on the hands and indices. Current prices sit between approximately £1,540 and £3,440.
Is Seiko Astron worth it?
Astron is built for those who appreciate its rugged good looks, but also for wearers who travel frequently or want a watch that is always accurate to the second without setting it. The GPS satellite connection means the watch works anywhere with a clear view of the sky, unlike radio-controlled watches that depend on regional transmitter coverage. Combined with solar power, it is a low-maintenance watch for frequent time zone changes.
Is Seiko Astron a good watch?
Astron is Seiko's flagship technology collection and the only current Seiko range built around GPS satellite time adjustment. Every reference uses sapphire crystal and solar charging lasting up to six-months on a full charge. The majority of cases are titanium with super-hard coating for a lightweight, scratch-resistant build. A perpetual calendar accurate to February 2100 is standard across the calibre range.
What is the water resistance of a Seiko Astron?
Most Astron references are rated to 10 bar (100m), suitable for everyday wear, swimming and snorkelling. Selected 5X53 references are rated to 20 bar (200m). Water resistance ratings are listed on each specific watch web page.
What size is a Seiko Astron?
Astron case diameters range from 39mm to 44.3mm. The Calibre 3X models are the most compact, with the 3X22 at 39mm and the 3X62 at 41.2mm to 42mm. The 5X53 ranges from 42.7mm to 43.5mm, and the 5X83 from 42mm to 44.3mm. Case thickness varies from around 11mm on the slimmest 3X references to 14.7mm on the largest 5X models. Full dimensions are listed on each specific watch web pagepage.
Is Seiko Astron made of titanium?
The majority of Astron references use titanium cases, with most featuring Seiko's super-hard coating for additional scratch resistance. Selected references incorporate ceramic bezels whilst others feature stainless steel, with super-hard coating on the majority.
Does Seiko Astron have sapphire crystal?
Yes. Every Astron reference uses sapphire crystal, either flat or dual-curved depending on the model. Most are treated with Seiko's super-clear coating to reduce reflections and maximise clarity, while a small number use a super-hard coating on the crystal instead.
Is there a ladies' Seiko Astron?
Yes, whilst all Seiko watches are designed for everyone to wear, the specific, smaller Astron ladies' collection uses the Calibre 3X (3X22 and 3X62). These models share the same GPS solar technology, sapphire crystal and solar-powered operation as the rest of the Astron range, in the more compact Calibre 3X format.
Where are Seiko Astron watches made?
Seiko Astron watches are made in Japan. The GPS solar calibres used across the range are produced in-house by Seiko.
